The 43rd Annual Meeting of the International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (ISOTT 2015), hosted by Britton Chance Center for Biomedical Photonics (BC CBMP), Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO) and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) was held at the PUYU hotel in Wuhan, China on July 11-16th, 2015. ISOTT President Qingming Luo (Huazhong University of Science and Technology) and President Lin Z. Li (University of Pennsylvania) co-chaired the meeting, and welcomed a total of 109 participants of which 33 were from Mainland China and 76 from other regions and overseas. The meeting had 22 new applicants for ISOTT membership representing 10 countries and 6 of them were from China.

The annual meeting brought together all the related fields in a unique cross-disciplinary forum for discussions on a broad range of topics on oxygen in health and disease. It included 103 presentations in total comprised of 4 keynote and 22 invited lectures, 30 oral presentations and 47 poster presentations. The meeting started off with the keynote lecture on Sunday by Prof. Lihong Wang (Washington University in St. Louis, USA, Fellow of the AIMBE, OSA, IEEE, and SPIE). The other keynote talks were delivered by Prof. Hideaki Koizumi (Vice President of Engineering Academy of Japan, Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering), Prof. Doug Wallace (Children’ s Hospital of Philadelphia, Member of the National Academy of Sciences, USA), and Prof. Peter Vaupel (University Medical Center, Mainz, Member of the Academy of Science and Literature at Mainz, Germany). The meeting featured “Britton Chance Memorial” sessions with a number of diversified and interesting research presentations and an invited talk by Dr. Duane F. Bruley (ISOTT historian, Synthesizer, Inc., USA) entitled “ISOTT from the beginning: a tribute to our deceased members (icons)”, reflecting on the ISOTT long history of 43 years and people who have made major contributions to the society including Britton Chance. In total 16 meeting sessions covered various research topics including Multi-Modal Imaging/Spectroscopy & Instrumentation; Cancer Metabolism; Cellular Hypoxia and Mitochondrial Function; Brain Oxygenation and Function; Other Organ Function and Metabolism; Oxygen Transport in Sports, Diseases and Clinical Care; Acupuncture, Meridians, and Primo Vascular System; EPR, MRS and MRI, etc.. Extensive discussion time was allocated to each oral presentation to enhance and facilitate fully scientific interaction. Each poster presenter was given 2 minutes to highlight orally the key points in the posters to the general audience. Interested participants were also invited to visit Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics and Britton Chance Center for Biomedical Photonics.

Many participants expressed their satisfaction with and enjoyment of the social events and the hospitality of local hosts. The social events included the welcome reception on Sunday hosted in the PUYU hotel, the farm food dinner in a restaurant nearby the East Lake on Monday served with the unique Wuhan style food, the Yangtze River cruise enjoying a spectacular night views of the city on Tuesday evening. The exercise program of Taiji Walk and Ba Duan Jin was especially designed for ISOTT 2015 attendees and was instructed on every morning throughout the conference.

The Award Ceremony and Banquet concluded the meeting on Thursday evening in the PUYU hotel. The Melvin H. Knisely award was presented to Alexander Caicedo Dorado (ESAT, KU Leuven, Belgium). Takagi Shun (Waseda University, Japan) won the Dietrich Leubbers award and Wenhao Xie (Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, HUST, China) won the Britton Chance award. Bruley travel awards were presented to Nannan Sun (China/US), Gemma Bale (UK), Chenyang Gao (China), Lingsong Qin (China), Guennadi Saiko (Canada), Kuangyu Shi (German), Phong Pan (UK) and Chae Jeong Lim (Korea). During this conference, a proposal on ISOTT award age limits was approved by the EC and General Assembly to raise the Knisely Award age limit to 40 years old and set no age limit for the Bruley Travel Award. In the end, Dr. Luo and Li presented a gift and passed the baton to the next ISOTT President Dr. Howard Halpern, who will organize the 2016 ISOTT annual meeting in Chicago.

The ISOTT 2015 presidents would like to acknowledge earnestly the great work done by our conference coordinators Dr. Hua Shi and Ms. Weiwei Dong plus a number of staff members and volunteers that have made the conference smooth and successful. Deep appreciation also goes to the Members of Local Organizing Committee, Scientific Committee, ISOTT Executive Board and all the session chairs, speakers and presenters for their participation, support, advice, and help. Together we have made the first ISOTT meeting in China a successful and memorable experience !
